Moving Birds to Denmark

Find out which birds can be imported to Denmark and the documents required...

Importing birds to Denmark is possible (under non-commercial transportation) but poultry is excluded.

Moving birds to Denmark from the EU

There are no EU or Danish requirements regarding the non-commercial transportation of birds to Denmark, providing they are not poultry and the bird is from other EU Member States or Andorra, Faeroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland and Vatican City State.

Poultry is classed as fowl, turkeys, guinea fowl, ducks, geese, quails, pigeons, pheasants, partridges and ratites (Ratitae) reared or kept in captivity for breeding, the production of meat or eggs for consumption, or for re-stocking supplies of game.

Moving birds from Third Countries to Denmark

Due to recent avian influenza outbreaks, the import of birds from Third Countries to Denmark is not permitted. However exceptions to this rule do apply if:

  • Birds are accompanied by their owners
  • Less than six live birds are being imported
  • The bird has undergone 30 day pre-export isolation in its place of departure (outside the EU) OR has undergone 30 days post import quarantine within the EU OR the bird has been vaccinated against avian flu within the last six months but no longer than 60 days before import using an H5 vaccine approved for the species OR the bird has been isolated for at least 10 days before departure and tested for the H5N1 antigen or genome whilst in isolation
  • Birds are accompanied by an approved Veterinary Certificate and declaration of the owner. These forms can be downloaded from the Danish Food and Veterinary Administration website
    • To download a veterinary certificate: Click here

Birds must only enter Denmark through one of two Border Inspection Posts at Copenhagen Airport and Billund Airport where documentation and ID checks are carried out.

Re-entering Denmark/Crossing Borders

The same requirements apply as detailed above for pets re-entering Denmark. For pets coming from outside the EU, it is advisable to apply for the EU Pet Passport Scheme once in Denmark to ensure easier future re-entry into Denmark.
