Adoption and Fostering in Dubai

The rules surrounding adoption and fostering for expats...

It is illegal in the UAE for Muslims to adopt a child. It is however, possible for them to foster an abandoned child or orphan, but not to give them their family name.

Resident expatriate couples from other religions can adopt a child from a country other than the UAE, after complying with all regulations regarding adoption, as specified by their respective Embassy. Dubai has no formal adoption agencies, but advice can be given at the Adoption Support Group, the Synergy Medical Centre, and the Human Relations Institute.

However, anyone who has adopted or fostered a child in their home country and has had all the necessary paperwork completed and approved will be regarded as the child's "guardians" by the UAE. This child can then be sponsored on a residency visa on condition that all the usual requirements relating to salary and accommodation are complied with.
