Understand the basics of the UAE at a glance...

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is situated on the eastern side of the Arabian Peninsula. It borders Saudi Arabia and the Sultanate of Oman, with coastlines on the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

The country is made up of seven different emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain. The largest emirate, taking up 80 percent of the country, is Abu Dhabi, which is also the capital. Dubai is the second largest emirate, and the largest city in the country.

The official language of the UAE is Arabic, although English, Hindi and Urdu are widely spoken.

The resident population of the UAE is approximately 4.6 million, according to the United Nations.
