Many cinemas in Provence show movies in their original language and it’s fairly straightforward to find a cinema showing films in English. 

Two of the most popular sites for finding movie schedules are AlloCine and Cinefil. Film schedules change every Wednesday. The movie schedules use many abbreviations; the main one to look out for when choosing a film is to make sure it is in its original version or “version originale” (VO), as opposed to “version française” (VF).

Some other useful abbreviations:

  • VOSTF (version originale sous-titrée en français): original undubbed version with French subtitles
  • Lunettes 3D: 3D glasses
  • Projection numérique: digital projection
  • Version restaurée: restored version
  • Séance: movie screening  (date & time)
  • TLJ (tous les jours): every day
  • PL (plein tarif): full ticket price
  • TR (tarif réduit): reduced ticket price (for students, children, seniors, etc)

Film Festivals in Provence

The Marseille Festival of Documentary Film, or Festival International de Cinéma de Marseille, is an annual 6 day festival in July with over 100 projections in venues across town.

The Toulon International Maritime Film Festival, or Festival International du Film Maritime, takes place every year in November at the Palais Neptune, Palais des Congrès de Toulon and concentrates on the themes of exploration, the environment and the study of the sea.
