The Principality of Monaco caters fairly well to physically disabled and wheelchair-bound people.

Social Benefits

The Monegasque government social security system provides financial benefits to residents of the Principality with disabilities, to help their situation.

Disabled Parking and Disability Priority Cards

The disabled parking card (Carte de stationnement véhicule) allows holders to park in specific parking spaces within the Principality and in the bordering Alpes-Maritimes département of France.

The disability priority card (Carte station debout pénible) entitles the holder to a seat on public transport and to move to the front of any queue.

Applications for the disabled parking card and the disability priority card must be submitted to the Direction de l'Action Sanitaire et Sociale along with the following documents:

  • Medical certificate
  • Identity card or resident's card (carte de résident)
  • One photograph
  • Photocopy of the vehicle's registration papers (for the disabled parking card only)

Nice International Airport

The following special facilities are available for people with reduced mobility: Reserved parking, wheelchairs, toilets with special access, access ramp, escalators, lift, specially equipped minibus and car. Bus with elevator, elevator platforms, rest area.

SNCF train service

SNCF railway organisation caters to hearing and sight disabled and the physically disabled and wheelchair bound passengers by providing designated spaces and facilities marked in the carriages. In some areas, adapted transport services to the station can be provided.

The SNCF has a dedicated website with information on accessibility and services for passengers with disabilities.

SNCM ferries

The ferry-boat service between Nice and Corsica make allowances for disabled passengers. The ferries have lifts and travelators to facilitate access for wheelchairs.

Car hire

Europcar and Hertz have adapted cars - brakes and accelerator on steering wheel - available for hire to paraplegic drivers. Car must be reserved seven days in advance.

Transport services

Ulysse provides seven day a week transport service for the French Riviera, catering specifically to helping those with mobility problems. It also transports the elderly and infirm, people with multiple disabilities the sight impaired as well as transporting disabled children to and from school.


Monaco has a Handiplage "Tiralo" in Larvotto. This is a beach area that has been designed and equipped for easy wheelchair access. Staff and facilities are in place to assist the physically disabled.
