French and Italian residents working in Monaco enjoy special rights due to a social security agreement between the Principality and its two neighbouring countries.

As an employee in Monaco, French and Italian residents are entitled to Monegasque social security and pensions. And as they pay tax in their native countries, they are also entitled to social security there.

However, French residents are exempt from some of the additional welfare contributions they would have to pay if they worked in France

A French national residing in Monaco will also remain taxable in France for income tax purpose unless:

  • they were resident in Monaco for five years on 13 October 1962
  • they are the French spouse of a foreigner living in Monaco and the marriage took place before 1 Jan 1986
