What you need to know when you need immediate healthcare in Berlin...
Germany is considered to have one of the best medical systems in the world. However, there are always tips and tricks that need to be known before attempting to navigate a foreign system, particularly when it comes to health needs.
- Note: In situations with serious or life-threatening symptoms always call emergency medical services at the telephone number: 112
Emergency Healthcare
Hospitals in Germany are specifically for emergencies or referral care only. All other issues should be dealt with by a primary care physician. It is possible to do emergency walk-ins and appointments with many physicians, even without being a previous patient at the practice.
- Find a doctor in Berlin (in German)
In instances when doctors are unavailable such as in the evenings or on weekends, emergency medical services are available through the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (Kassenärztliche Vereinigung) Berlin. The Kassenärztliche Vereinigung (KV) provides daily medical advice and assistance via telephone as well as house calls. All calls are free and house calls are covered by private and public health insurances.

In situations where urgent medical care is needed, emergency rooms are available for use for everyone who has health insurance. For those without health insurance, a stay in the hospital and treatments can be very expensive. Those traveling with foreign health insurances should verify that the health care provider will cover health costs incurred in Germany.
Hospitals in Germany are designated either public or private dependent upon whether they are run by the government or by for-profit companies. Regardless of whether the hospital is public or private, they accept all types of German health insurances. There are also hospitals run by religious organizations, but it is important to note that they accept patients of all faiths.

Pediatric Emergencies
Not all emergency rooms are equipped for pediatric care. While all hospitals will help a child with an emergency, it is best to seek out hospitals with children’s emergency rooms.
The Kassenärztliche Vereinigung Berlin also provides children medical services which are free of charge for those with public or private health insurance. These medical services are provided primarily at times when normal doctors’ offices are closed.
