Non-EU/EEA citizens who wish to remain in Germany long-term are required to have a residency permit which can be can be acquired at the Foreigners Registration Office (Ausländerbehörde).


The Foreigners Registration Office in Berlin is open four days a week. As Berlin is a large city with many international residents, it is best to book an appointment well in advance for most services.

Residence permits can be extended up to three months before their expiration, and it is generally recommended to extend them four to six weeks before expiry. 

  • Note: Residence permits are automatically extended until the date of the pre-booked appointment, assuming that the appointment was made before the expiration of the permit. However, travelling abroad is only allowed with a valid, non-expired permit. These rules do not apply to Schengen Visas.

For many services at the Foreigners Registration Office, pre-booked appointments are not required and not all services have appointment booking.

Walk-in appointments are allowed for most services at the Foreigners Registration Office three days a week: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. As there is a limited capacity of appointments each day, early arrival is best.
