Apfelweinfest (Apple Wine Festival)

Frankfurt's beloved apfelwein is celebrated at the summertime Apfelweinfest. A regional Hessan tradition, apple wine is a local favourite. The festival includes entertainment, food, music, a market and of course, large quantities of apple wine served in the traditional earthenware pitchers called bembel.

Christkindlmarkt

Christmas markets in Germany are popular seasonal attractions, but the Christkindlmarkt in Frankfurt is especially popular, drawing large, festive crowds. Dating to the 14th century, this market is one of the most popular in Germany, attracting several million visitors a year. At Römerberg, Paulsplatz and Mainkai, the market usually opens in late November and is open daily. Guided tours are available via the Tourism Office.

Fastnachtszug (Carnival)

Fastnachtszug is a celebration of the coming end of winter. The exciting Faschnachtszug parade draws hundreds of thousands of people to the city centre to watch as the costumed parade participants (dressed as witches and scarecrows) throw sweets and make merry. It is traditional for spectators to call out “helau” to the passing floats.

Luminale

Essentially an architecture and design festival, the annual spring time Luminale is a week-long event featuring illuminated architecture and art installations.

Mainfest

Originally begun by fishermen and boatmen as a way to show appreciation for the river Main and what it provides, today Mainfest still holds some fishing-themed events. Over the course of approximately three days, visitors can enjoy music, food, games, rides and fireworks along the river. At Römerberg (Mainkai).

Museumsuferfest

A cultural festival along the museum-studded embankment of the Main river (Museumsufer), Museumsuferfest is a weekend of exhibitions, entertainment and fine food. The very popular festival normally draws over 3 million visitors each year.

Opernplatzfest

Since 1978, the Opernplatzfest has paid tribute to the Opernplatz square in Frankfurt. Theatre performances and music entertain the crowds in the square while gourmet food is available to fill their stomachs.

Schweizer Strassenfest

A gourmet street-market along Schweizer Strass in Sachsenhausen, this summertime festival features upscale open-air dining, food product stalls, music and entertainment. A popular event for the foodies in Frankfurt.

Spring Dippemess

Taking place at the Festplatz on Ratsweg, the Spring Dippermess folk festival includes rides, games, food and entertainment. Originally a potters market, it expanded to become the exciting festival it is today. The festival runs for several weeks every spring.
