Sailing is a popular sports activity in Hamburg and the surrounding areas. There are many attractive sailing locations, and a great choice of clubs for sailors.

Some of the most popular sailing areas in the neighbouring state of Schleswig-Holstein include Heiligenhafen and Lübecker Bucht off the Baltic Sea coast, on the River Schlei, off the island of Sylt, and on the lakes, Großer Plöner See (Lake Plön), Ratzeburger See, and Wittensee. The Kleinmecklenburger Lake region and the Müritz Lake region in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are also popular. In Lower Saxony, sailing can be carried out on the Lower Elbe.

Sailing Events

Kiel Week (Kieler Woche) is an annual sailing event lasting nine days. It takes place near the end of June in Kiel on the Baltic Sea, 100 Km north of Hamburg. Around three million visitors from around the world attend the event.

In addition to its many regattas and sailing races, Kiel Week also includes a huge summer festival featuring cultural and music events, science and industry exhibitions, galas, firework displays and street parties. One of the highlights of the event is the Tall Ships Parade, at which tall ships, yachts and traditional sailing boats are showcased.
