Tourist Attractions and Things to Do in Munich

Information and links for tourists to Munich, with details on must-see sights in the region...

Marienplatz

As one of the main city squares, the Marienplatz is a good place to start discovering Munich. Close to the train station in a pedestrian zone, visitors can see the towers of the Frauenskirche (Church of Our Lady) from here, visit shops and cafes, and stop in at one of the beer halls. The mechanical Glockenspiel, made in 1908, on the front of the Rathaus (town hall) chimes every day (depending on the season) showing figures acting out stories from the 16th century.

Frauenskirche

The towers of the Frauenskirche (Church of Our Lady) are a major landmark on the Munich skyline. As no building is permitted to be taller, they can be seen from all over the city centre and a visit to the top of the towers on a clear day results in a stunning view of the Alps. Dating from the 15th century, the Frauenskirche is Munich’s main cathedral.

Hofbräuhaus

The Hofbrauhaus is the most famous brewery and beer hall in Munich. Visitors in the city for the Oktoberfest celebrations can expect this beer hall to get very busy. Founded in 1589, the hall has hosted many notables figures from history (with Mozart, Lenin, and Hitler as former guests) but in present times, it tends to be filled with tourists relaxing on the benches with a stein and enjoying German food.

Alte Pinakothek

Established in 1836, the Alte Pinakothek art gallery boasts a large collection of Old Master paintings, including Albrecht Dürer, Titian, Rubens, and Rembrandt. Part of the Kunstareal (art district), there is something for everyone nearby; the Glyptothek holds artefacts from the ancient world, the Neue Pinakothek displays works of Romanticism and Impressionism and the Pinakothek der Moderne shows more contemporary pieces.
