Alcohol and Drugs

The sale of tobacco is prohibited to anyone under the age of 18. The minimum age to purchase alcohol in Gibraltar is 18. In licensed premises, beer, wine and cider can be served to those aged 16 or over, if the alcohol by volume is less than 15 percent.

Drugs are not as widespread a problem as in some areas of Europe.

There are Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings in Gibraltar for people for whom drugs or alcohol have become a problem.


The minimum age for driving a car is 18. Teenagers can apply for a learner's licence at the age of 17. Learner plates must be displayed on the front and back of the vehicle at all times until a full driving licence has been obtained.
