Travelling with Pets

Information about entering Greece with a pet, and guidelines for travelling around the country...

Pet owners must carry a valid EU Pet Passport for each pet when travelling with their animals to and in Greece.

Dogs are usually allowed on the public beaches; when this is not the case, a sign indicates the prohibition. Most private/serviced beaches do not allow dogs.

Dogs are allowed in some hotels.

There are many dog and cat "hotels" (kennels and catteries), where pets can be left while an owner is away.

Public transport

  • Train: Pets can be taken on trains if they can fit in a bag or cage and are placed at the owner's feet. This is only allowed on regular trains, not on international or express trains
  • Bus: Pets are allowed on public transport in Athens if they are in a special carrying case measuring no more than 70 X 40 X 50cm
  • Ferry: Pets travel free of charge but are not allowed in cabins or indoor public areas. Pet owners must carry valid health papers for their animal (EU Pet Passport)
