Teenage Issues

Information on some of the issues which affect young people including teen pregnancy, alcohol and drug use and the laws surrounding them in Hungary...

Teenagers and Alcohol

The legal age for drinking alcohol in Hungary is 18, although most teenagers start drinking earlier.

There are English-speaking Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in Hungary for those for whom alcohol has become a problem.

Teenagers and Drugs

Hungary has some of the harshest drug laws in the European Union: possession of illicit substances in small amounts (without any differentiation) is a crime punishable with two years' imprisonment. Therefore, even the possession of a small amount of marijuana can result in a prison sentence. Currently, children under the age of 15 cannot be criminally prosecuted; however, this age cap will be lowered to 12 by 2013.

Most drugs are available in Hungary, from "disco" drugs to heroin, but they are less widespread than in western Europe.

The legal age for having an abortion without parental consent in Hungary is 18.

Pregnancies can be terminated up to the twelfth week. However, before a termination can take place, the woman and, if possible, the father as well, have to go to Family Planning (Családvédelmi Szolgálat) twice to receive information about state support and adoption. There has to be a gap of three days between the two appointments.

Pregnancies can be terminated up to the 24th week if severe foetus abnormalities are suspected.
