Information on getting around the country using the bus and coach networks...

It is possible to travel to Budapest by bus from many parts of Europe such as France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, UK, Italy, Austria and the Czech Republic with Eurolines.

Most bus services in Hungary are run by VOLÁN.

Tickets can be either be bought at bus stations or from the driver when boarding a bus. While bus fares depend on the distance being travelled, there are discounts and special fares available:

  • Children under the age of six can travel free of charge
  • Children between the ages of six and 14 are eligible for a discount of 50 percent
  • Over 65s travel free of charge. This applies to all EU citizens providing they carry proof of age and to non-Hungarian citizens with Hungarian identity cards
  • All students, on daytime courses, with a valid student identity card receive a 50 percent discount

Travel Passes

Travel passes are available for all long-distance bus routes; they are either valid for a fortnight or one month. All travel passes require a photographic identity card purchased from a VOLÁN ticket office. Students are eligible for a pass for the journey between their residential address and their educational institution; on average they offer a discount of 80 percent of normal fare prices.
