Registering a Birth in India

How to register a new-born child in India…

Every birth needs to be registered within 21 days. Only then can a birth certificate be issued.

The process for registering a child’s birth differs from state to state. This is a process that most private hospitals can advise on. They will issue the parents with proof of the birth, which has to be taken to the local government offices for it to be registered.

Take photocopies and originals of the following documents:

  • Parents’ passports and visas
  • Parents’ birth certificates
  • Marriage certificate (if there is one)
  • Proof of birth letter from the hospital

Multiple copies of the birth certificate can be issued. Expect them to be in Hindi, English and the official state language.

Most expats will also register births in their own countries.

Any foreign child born in India will need an exit visa to leave the country. An exit visa is obtained by going to the local Foreigners Regional Registration Office, no more than seven days before flying, with the following documents:

  • Copy of the exit permission application form
  • Child’s birth certificate
  • Copy of both parents’ passport and visa
  • Copy of the child’s passport
  • Copy of parents’ proof of address
  • Copy of whole family’s airline tickets
  • Passport-sized photographs

It is a good idea to have several photocopies of each document. Agents can be hired to deal with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office, which is notoriously bureaucratic.
