There are many Internet service providers in India offering reliable services at competitive rates. Most of the providers that offer telephone services also offer Internet connections. There are different packages for Internet users depending on usage and connection speed.

Broadband connections are available all over India for a flat monthly fee. The highest connection speeds cost most. Connections are generally reliable, although frequent power cuts in some cities can disrupt services. Wireless connections are common and are available in many restaurants and cafés. Mobile Internet services are also available for smartphones or in the form of portable devices that can be plugged into the USB port of a computer or laptop.

Two pieces of documentation are required to set up an Internet account:

  • Proof of address – a lease agreement, electricity or telephone bill, or bank or credit card statement will suffice. It should not be more than three months old (except for the lease agreement)
  • Proof of identity – a passport, PAN card or driving licence

If applying for a phone and Internet connection from the same provider, documents need only be submitted once.
