Yoga in India

Information on different yoga schools in India…

Yoga has become immensely popular all over the world in recent years. Classes and schools can be found in almost every city in India, although the quality of instruction can vary widely.

India’s most popular yoga schools with branches across the country (and the world) include:

  • Iyengar Yoga: Yogacharya BKS Iyengar is in his nineties and still practises yoga on a daily basis. This style of yoga is precise and disciplined. It uses props such as blocks and belts to help students ease into poses according to their own ability. To find a certified Iyengar teacher: Click here
  • Ashtanga Yoga: This rigorous style, sometimes dubbed “power yoga”, aligns movement with breath. Students practise sequences of poses that move from one into another. Popularised by the late Shri K Pattabhi Jois, his yoga school, the K Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute in Mysore, is now run by his son Sharath. For a list of teachers in other cities: Click here
  • Sivananda: This school of yoga follows the teachings of Swami Sivananda. It has centres and ashrams all over India, as well as in North America and Europe. The pace of classes is slow and the focus is on the mastery of the 12 basic poses. To find a centre: Click here
