Dog Licences

Owners of dogs in Mumbai must get a licence for their pet; proof of a rabies vaccination is required before the licence can be issued. The licence can be obtained at all local ward offices and must be renewed annually. There is an annual fee for the dog licence, and a one-off fee for the dog licence book when registering the dog for the first time.

The licence must be carried by the owner at all times when walking their dog.

Animal Organisations in Mumbai

Bombay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA): This NGO has been operating for over 100 years in Mumbai with the aim of preventing cruelty to animals. It has a large veterinary hospital providing services to sick and injured animals, as well as information on pet care and pet re-homing services.

PARTH (Plants and Animals Related to Humans) is an NGO in the Thane District. Volunteers and donations are welcome.

Youth Organization in Defence of Animals (YODA): Based in Mumbai, this NGO works towards rescuing animals, has sterilisation programmes, as well as fostering, transporting, re-homing and medical services.

In Defense of Animals India (IDA India): An NGO operating for the cause of animals' protections and rights. Its services include providing shelter, dispensaries and ambulance services for suffering and sick animals. It is also involved in creating awareness about cruelty to animals.

Animals Matter To Me: A charitable trust in Mumbai involved in animal welfare and supporting other NGOs operating in this field. It is involved in rescue, relocation, re-homing, vaccinations and providing shelter for animals. Various awareness programmes are also carried out to educate the general public on animal welfare.

PETA India: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is based in Mumbai and aims to protect animals from commercial or experimental use through education programmes, and through the involvement of celebrities and media.
