There are a number of support services and facilities for people with disabilities in Mumbai. These support services are provided by the government, as well as by government supported NGOs operating in Mumbai.

Public Transport

People with disabilities are entitled to concessions for train travel for themselves and one accompanying person.

There are separate reservation counters at railway stations, as well as facilities such as restrooms and parking spaces for people with disabilities. There are special carriages on local trains in Mumbai for the blind and people with other physical disabilities.

Local bus transport in Mumbai is provided by BEST. These buses all have three seats reserved for people with disabilities, and allow these passengers to board the bus at the front.

People with disabilities are entitled to concessions on buses.

Organisations for People with Disabilities

Fellowship of Physically Handicapped: NGO working to support people with physical disabilities, and to help their insertion into society. It provides counselling, educational sponsorships for adults with disabilities and aids and appliances (wheelchairs, crutches):

National Association for the Blind: Provides services to the blind and visually impaired and aims to prevent blindness and low vision.

Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Hearing: Involved in the rehabilitation, education and social development of people with hearing impairments.

Apang Utkarsh Seva Sanstha is an NGO raising awareness about the issues facing people with disabilities and providing support for their economic and social welfare.

EDARCH (Entrepreneurship Development and Rehabilitation Centre) provides support to people with physical disabilities living in Mumbai.

Organisations for Parents of Children with Disabilities

ADAPT: Engaged in support activities for children and young adults with disabilities. Services provided include assessment, therapy, counselling, inclusive education, skills training and job placement.

The Indian Council for Mental Health: Provides services for children with developmental disabilities, as well as special education to mentally challenged and hearing impaired children. It has two schools; one in Nerul, Navi Mumbai and another in Mulund, Mumbai.

Parents of Down's Syndrome: Non-profit organisation for families of children with Down's syndrome.

Maharashtra Dyslexia Association is a non-profit organisation helping students with dyslexia and specific learning or language disabilities.
