Find out about the qualifications required to teach English as a foreign language in Indonesia…
There is a strong demand in Indonesia for native English speakers who are qualified to teach the language. English is part of the Indonesian national curriculum so there is a continuous need for well-qualified language teachers. A teaching qualification, such as TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign language) or TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) is needed to prove to the Indonesian government that an individual is qualified in the field.
Work permits to teach English are only given to natives of the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Working without a valid work permit is illegal.
A number of companies specialise in teaching English in Indonesia and have dedicated recruitment websites:
- English First, the largest chain of language schools in Indonesia
- TEFL Job Placements
There are also a number of international schools in Jakarta and around Indonesia which employ qualified teachers.
