Healthcare is provided to all citizens and residents by a mixed public-private system. The public part is the national health service is called, Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (SSN) This is controlled by the Ministry of Health and is administered on a regional basis.

The Italian healthcare system is funded through corporate and value-added tax revenues collected by the central government. This is then distributed to regional governments at a local level by the Local Health Service (Azienda Sanitaria Locale, ASL).
