Places of Interest in Rome

Information on the main tourist attractions, places of interest and sights to see in and around Rome and Lazio...

Rome and the Lazio region offer an immense variety of places to visit.

The Colosseum: Originally known as the Flavian Amphitheatre and inaugurated in the 70s AD, the Colosseum is the symbol of Rome and the biggest monument of the Roman Empire. Open every day from 09:00 until one hour before sunset.

Trevi Fountain: The Fontana di Trevi is a late-Baroque creation commissioned by Pope Clement XIII in 1762 and is without a doubt the most well-known of all Rome's fountains. Tourists traditionally throw two coins into the fountain; one for the fulfilment of a wish and the other to ensure their return to Rome.

Roman Forum: Once the centre of the Roman Empire, this was the central area around which ancient Rome developed. The Forum includes major monuments, buildings and other ancient ruins, including the Temple of Caesar, the Arch of Titus, the Basilica Emilia and many more.

Vatican City

The smallest independent nation in the world, it is the sovereign territory of the Holy See and the location of the Apostolic Palace (the Pope's official residence). Things to see inside Vatican City include the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican museum, the Vatican gardens, the Piazza San Pietro, the Basilica di San Pietro and much more.

Pontine Islands, Latina

There are two main islands in this archipelago, Ponza and Ventotene, and other smaller islands, which can be visited by boat. Some are very small and have few amenities. Ponza Island is the largest and most visited of the islands, and has facilities for swimming and diving. Ventotene is a quieter retreat. The Islands can be reached from Terracina and Formia (both in the province of Latina) by hydrofoil or ferry.
