Learning to Drive in Japan

The regulations affecting teenage drivers in Japan…

The legal driving age for cars and motorbikes is 18, and for scooters it is 16.

To get a driving licence, an aptitude test, written test and practical test have to be taken. Usually learners go to a driving school, but driving schools in Japan can be very expensive.

Rules for new drivers

For the first year after receiving a Japanese driving licence an individual is considered to be a new driver and must put a new driver sticker on their car. If a new driver receives a certain number of penalties they are fined and have to attend a new driver's lecture.
