Dogs and cats are popular in Tokyo. There are several unique places in the city, called cat cafés or cat salons, where visitors can play or cuddle the establishments' cats, usually for an additional fee.


There are several veterinarians in Tokyo, some of which have a 24-hour emergency telephone number. It is recommended to locate the one nearest to the place of residence.

Lost and Found Animals

If an animal is lost or found, contact the nearest neighbourhood police station (Koban).

Pet owners should also contact the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Animal Protection Centre. This is the pound where stray dogs and cats are taken when found in the city. They are open every day from 09:00-17:45.

Abused or Injured Animals

Animal cruelty is an offence under Japanese law; contact the neighbourhood police station (Koban) to report any cruelty to animals.
