Teenagers and alcohol

The minimum legal age for drinking alcohol in Japan is 20. For teenagers for whom alcohol has become a problem there are regular Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in English in Tokyo and the rest of Japan.

Teenagers and pregnancy

Japan has one of the lowest rates of teenage birth in the industrialised world.

The contraceptive pill was legalised in Japan in 1999. The choice of oral contraceptives is limited and they can only be obtained with a doctor's prescription.

Abortion is permitted for socio-economic reasons as well as if the pregnancy threatens the health of the mother. A woman under the age of 20 requires the signature of someone who is older than 20 in order to undergo the procedure.

It is illegal for unmarried couples under the age of 18 to have sex; however young men between 18 and 20 and young women between 16 and 20 can get married with their parents' consent.
