Bikes and Cycling in Luxembourg

Everything you need to know about cycling in Luxembourg, with information about bicycle rental and the different self-service bike systems...

Cycling is a popular sport and pastime in Luxembourg and there is an extensive national network of cycling paths.

Luxembourg city has good facilities for cyclists with its own self-service bicycle rental system, promoted by the government, called Vel'oh. The service operates throughout the city 24/7 and provides an environmentally friendly way of getting round the city.

How to Subscribe to Vel'oh

To use the bicycles two options are available; a seven day ticket or a one year subscription.

Seven day tickets can be obtained from any of the bicycle stations, using a debit card. Each station has a main terminal with clear instructions. After following the instructions at the main terminal, the person will be issued with a ticket and identification number. This number is required each time the person wants to rent a bicycle. The first half hour of use is free and there is an hourly rate thereafter, with a maximum fee for 24 hours. The cost of the service is debited at the end of the seven-day subscription.

Long-term cards: Application forms for a long term card are available from the Luxembourg Tourist Office, the Town Hall or from the Citizen's Office (Bierger-Center). It is also possible to subscribe online.

The completed application form should be sent, along with a copy of proof of identity, bank details for payment and a direct debit authorisation for the deposit to the following address:

  • JC Decaux
    90 rue de Cessange
    L-1320 Luxembourg

The cost of the bicycle rental is debited from the person's bank account on a monthly basis. Hourly rates are clearly indicated at each station. Subscriptions are automatically renewed from one year to the next unless the person cancels by letter or email.

The deposit is debited if the bicycle is not returned within 24 hours.

Using the Bicycles

The bicycles are available for use to anyone over the age of 14 and a person must have third-party insurance in order to use the bikes. A basket is fitted on the front, however, there is no luggage rack on the back of the bike to install a child seat. Cycling helmets are not provided.

Theft, loss or accidents

If the bicycle is stolen, report the incident to the police within 48 hours and call the Vel'oh hotline within 24 hours. If the bike has a flat tyre or if the person is involved in a minor accident when using one of the bikes they must call the Vel'oh hotline and wait for a member of staff to arrive:

  • Hotline Tel: 800 611 00

In the event of the loss of a long-term card, call the hotline. A new subscription card will be sent for a nominal fee.
