Getting Online: Internet in Malaysia

Dial-up Internet services, broadband services and Internet telephone services are available from a number of providers. The main Internet provider in Malaysia is TMNet, a division of Telekom Malaysia, but independent service providers such asĀ Maxis and Jaring also provide broadband services.

In major cities, ADSL and wireless broadband services are available with fairly good signal strengths.

To get connected to the Internet, the following documents are needed by the Internet service provider:

  • Photocopy of passport
  • Copy of work permit or visa
  • Utility bill from address where the service is to be provided
  • Information about the landline where service is to be installed

A deposit must also be paid, the amount depends on the service provider.

Application forms are in English and it takes about a week for the installation to take place. Some Internet service providers have online applications.
