Malaysia is divided into Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia. The capital city is Kuala Lumpur, while the administrative capital is Putrajaya.

The main trading cities are Georgetown, Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, and Labuan. Public holidays in Malaysia's 13 states are determined by the Federal Government, but there are also other holidays unique to each state.

Malay (Bahasa Melayu) is the official language, but English is widely spoken and is the language used for business. Most official information is also available in English. Malaysia is multicultural and many other languages are spoken throughout the country.

Malaysia's population is approximately 28.3 million of whom 57 percent are Malay. The remainder of the population is predominately made up of Chinese, Indians and Bumiputeras.

Islam is the official religion, but many other religions are also practised in the country.
