Making Calls Within Malaysia
With the exception of local state calls, all calls -, whether to an out-of-state landline or mobile telephone, use a different prefix.
Dialling local numbers:
There are no prefixes. Most numbers within Kuala Lumpur and the state of Selangor have eight digits. Other states within the Peninsula have seven digits, but East Malaysia has only six digits.
- To make a local call, dial the eight-digit number to be connected
Dialling out-of-state numbers:
Each state has a two-digit area code prefix, for example, 03, 04, or 05, which is followed by the telephone number. The exception is East Malaysia, which has an area code consisting of a three-digit prefix, 088.
- To call an out-of-state number, dial the area code followed by the telephone number. For example, dial 0 which is the out-of-state access number, plus 3 which is the Selangor area code, plus the telephone number
Dialling mobile numbers:
Mobile numbers do not have area codes, but unique service provider codes. To dial a mobile telephone number, dial the service provider code (013, 012, 017, 016), followed by the mobile number.
Calls to mobiles are charged at a higher rate than to out-of-state landline numbers.
