Find out about the different types of holiday accommodation available and the star rating system in Malta...

One of the biggest industries in Malta is tourism, so there is a wide variety of hotels and accommodation to choose from. The large number of places to stay means that there is a great choice for all budgets.

Types of Accommodation

Hotels in Malta are classified by means of a star system and vary from two to five stars. The classification system is managed by the Malta Tourism Authority. Two-star hotels provide accommodation with basic amenities, with a reception desk that must be open during the day, and a night porter on duty at night. At the other end of the scale, five-star hotels provide luxury accommodation with all amenities including a restaurant and bar, air-conditioned rooms, swimming pool and 24-hour room service.

Aparthotels and tourist villages are also classified using the star system, which ranges from two to four stars. Tourist villages provide similar amenities to hotels, but must provide outdoor activities and sports and recreation facilities. Both aparthotels and tourist villages have self-catering units; in addition aparthotels must provide facilities for cooking within the self-catering unit or room.

A popular type of accommodation on the island of Gozo is the farmhouse. Most farmhouses sleep four to 12 people and have their own private pool. Many of the farmhouses are more than 400 years old, and décor varies from antique to contemporary. There are also a number of guesthouses in Malta, which provide basic accommodation with shared bathroom facilities. Guesthouses and farmhouses are classified as standard class or comfort class.

Hostels in Malta all need to reach a basic set of standards for operations and are a cheaper alternative for those on a budget. Hostels are also classified as standard class or comfort class.

Another option is camping; there are a few camping sites where one can hire tents or motor homes, another option is to obtain a permit from the local council to camp in the wild.
