Bus Travel in Malta

Information on getting around the islands of Malta and Gozo using the bus network...

Malta’s current bus system is run by Malta Public Transport (MPT).

Bus Routes

MPT operates five types of routes.

  • Mainline routes run between Valletta and other localities across the island of Malta; these routes are numbered 1–99
  • Direct routes running between different localities but not terminating in Valletta are numbered 100–299
  • Gozo routes are numbered 300 onwards and service Malta’s neighbouring island
  • Express routes operate between the airport and various localities and do not stop at every stop – these are numbered X1 to X7
  • Night buses all start in St Julian’s and run until about 04:00 in the morning. These are more limited than daytime routes, but go to most of the bigger localities. Night buses operate on Friday and Saturday evenings; however, during the summer, night buses operate every night from Valletta to Cirkewwa

Gozo does not have a night bus service.

Bus schedules change each winter and summer.

Tickets can be purchased on board from the bus drivers or at ticket booths or vending machines

There are a number of ticket types, varying from two-hour tickets to 90-day tickets.

Tickets valid for longer periods are discounted. Discounted student and senior tickets are also available. Children between 3 and 10 years old also get a discounted price, and children under three years old travel free.

Travel for People with Disabilities

All buses have a low floor, making them fully accessible to persons with mobility impairments. Each bus has a dedicated wheel chair area as well as a designated seating area for people with disabilities.

Travel with Pets

Service pets (guide dogs, assistance dogs) are allowed on buses at any time. Small dogs are allowed at the discretion of the driver and must be kept in a carrier case or on the passenger’s lap at all times.

Park and Ride

There are park and ride facilities in Floriana, just outside the capital Valletta. Parking prices are very reasonable and the shuttle service to and from Valletta and Floriana is free of charge. Bus services from the Park & Ride sites generally operate between 05:00 and 23:00.
