Lower Secondary Education
Lower secondary education (Educación Secundaria) begins at eleven or twelve years of age, and lasts for three years. Students must successfully complete primary education before moving on to this level.
The curriculum at this level includes lessons in Spanish, English, mathematics, natural sciences, geography, history, art, physical education, ethics and citizenship.
The Mexican government also has a program called telesecundaria that provides distance education for children in rural areas. This provides teaching via television.

Upper Secondary
After three years of lower secondary school, students who wish to continue their studies have the option to continue on to high school education (Preparatoria or Bachillerato), either general or technical, or undertake vocational training studies (Profesional Técnico). Upper secondary education (Educación Media Superior) begins at age fifteen and last for three years, although in some instances it can be as short as two years or as long as five.
To enter a public high school, students must pass an entrance exam. The Preparatoria or Bachillerato general schools prepare students for entry into tertiary education programs. After the first year of general studies, students can choose to specialize in certain subjects, for example, sciences or humanities.
