It is common practice for women to be assisted by nurses, an obstetrician and their future pediatrician when giving birth. After delivery the pediatrician will check the baby and provide details of future check-ups.

There are numerous high quality doctors and pediatricians in Panama. A new born baby is expected to see a doctor for check-ups at least once a month for the first year of life. In the second year, visits should be made every three months. After the age of three children should see a pediatrician at least once a year for a check-up, or whenever there are concerns about their health or well-being.

There are no child benefits or welfare assistance for families with children in Panama.
