Roman Catholic Marriage Ceremony

Information on how to organize a Roman Catholic wedding ceremony in Panama...

A civil marriage must be performed prior to the religious ceremony.

Couples must undertake a premarital preparation course and are advised to take this six months prior to getting married, after which they receive a certificate of attendance. Courses are held regularly in nine of Panama City's parishes.

More information about premarital preparation courses can be obtained by telephone from the Movimiento Familiar Cristiano of Latin America (MFC) or by visiting the offices of the MFC in the Metropolitan Curia between 14:00 and 18:00.

Statement of marriage

A statement of marriage is an affidavit signed by both parties before a pastor and two witnesses (each party must have one witness who is not related to either party and is of legal age). It is recommended to make an appointment to have the affidavit signed two months before the wedding date.

The following documents are required:

  • A recent certificate declaring the baptism of both parties (issued no more than six months before the marriage). A baptism certificate can be obtained from the church where the baptism took place. In the event that one party is a foreigner, the certificate must be updated and authenticated by a bishop of the party's home country
  • Original or photocopy of the certificate of civil marriage
