Vehicle Taxes

Find out about the different taxes that apply to owners of a vehicle in Portugal…

Road/Circulation tax (Imposto Único de Circulação - IUC) must be paid annually on the month that the vehicle was first registered. Drivers are required to keep a receipt as proof of payment.

The amount of tax paid is different for vehicles registered before and after July 2007. Owners of cars registered before July 2007 pay an amount of tax directly related to the age of the vehicle and its cubic capacity. The tax on vehicles registered after July 2007 will also take into account the vehicle's CO2 emissions and the power of the engine.

There is an additional surtax for cars with more than 180g/km of CO2 emissions. Diesel cars also pay a surtax. Goods or commercial vehicles pay accordingly to their gross weight.

Road tax can be paid at the local Finanças office or via the Internet at e-financas (a password is needed).
