Citizens of the USA, United Kingdom and Australia living in Portugal are well catered to by their Consular sections of the Embassies and other organisations. Citizens of these countries will find a wealth of up-to-date, officially published information from the links below.

US Citizens

The US Citizens Service consular section provides information on visas, passports and has information for American visitors in case of an emergency. Tax assistance is also available to American residents during the tax-filing season.

UK Citizens

The British Embassy of Lisbon has up-to-date news on matters relating to Portuguese-British relations, as well as much information on trade and investment between Portugal and the UK.

The British Embassy and Consulate offers many services to British citizens in Portugal. These include:

  • Registering births and deaths and issuing certified copies of certificates
  • Certifying documents
  • Providing information about transferring funds
  • Providing help for those who are victim of a crime or in hospital
  • Providing contact details of lawyers, interpreters, doctors and funeral directors

The Embassy also provides useful information about residency in Portugal, importing cars, getting married, the pet travel scheme and more.

Note: UK embassies, high commissions, and consulates no longer issue passports. This is now done centrally by Her Majesty's Passport Office (HMPO), an agency of the UK Home Office. Applications for renewal take at least four weeks from the form's arrival with HMPO by post but may take longer if further information is necessary. HMPO advises UK nationals not to book travel until they have received their renewed passport.

The Embassy of Ireland in Portugal offer services to Irish citizens including travel advice, the issuance of passports and emergency travel documents, and the issuance of documents related to citizenship, birth, marriage, nationality, and the importation of cars. The Embassy also certifies documents and provides assistance in the event of an assault, robbery, illness, accident or death involving an Irish national.
