Portugal by Bus

Getting around Portugal by bus and coach…

There are a number of companies that offer local and national bus and coach services in Portugal. Many companies do not have Internet sites and the best way to get tickets is often to visit the local bus station directly. Some of the major providers who do have an Internet presence are:

Rede Expressos: a national express coach service based in Lisbon. The network connects several hundred locations in the country with most routes having more than one daily service. The brand represents the grouping together of several bus companies. They have an English-language website that includes timetables, special offers, and online ticket sales. Tickets can be purchased up to 14 days in advance. Pets can be taken on buses providing they are in a suitable cage. Guide dogs are allowed on the buses. Members of the RFlex program can take advantage of discounted travel at certain times of the day.

Rodo Tejo: a regional bus company serving the central and western area of Portugal including Leiria, Torres Novas, Caldas da Rainha and Santarém. Their website is in Portuguese and offers timetable, fare, and ticket information.

Rodonorte: operates bus services in the north of Portugal. Their Portuguese website has fare and timetabling information.

All of Portugal's major cities have good bus services operating in them and their suburbs. Various passes and cards are available which help reduce the cost of travel. It is becoming more common for passes to combine travel on trains, metro services, and the bus network.

Buses in Porto are run by STCP. Their website has details on routes, ticketing, and timetable information. Much of rural Portugal has a very low population density and bus services are sparse, with many smaller towns and villages only having services to fit in with the school day or shopping needs.
