Teenage Drivers

Information on the regulations affecting teenagers behind the wheel in Qatar...

The minimum age for acquiring a local Qatari driving licence is 18. Holders of an international driving permit, who are also from one of the countries on an approved list, can obtain a Qatari licence without taking tests. Other nationalities must take a local driving test. In some cases, it is possible to apply for permission for 17-year-olds to take driving lessons - driving instructors or the Ministry of Interior's Traffic Department in Doha should be consulted in this instance. The same age limits apply for driving motorcycles.

Applications for a driving licence are made at the Madinat Khalifa Traffic Department. The offices are open from 07:00 to 11:00 and 16:00 to 19:00.

Insurance for young drivers is not prohibitively expensive in Qatar, as insurance costs are based on the value of the vehicle being insured, rather than the age of the driver.
