Mobile Telephones

Find out how to get yourself a mobile cellular phone in Qatar...

Qtel and Vodafone are currently the two mobile service providers in Qatar.

Both operators provide two types of package: pay-as-you-go and monthly post-paid options.

Pre-paid services

Qtel's pre-paid option is called Hala.

To sign up for the service, a SIM card must be purchased and activated. Credit can be added through top-up cards, which are widely sold throughout the country, or online.

Vodafone's pre-paid option, Red, works in a similar fashion, and can be topped up via their website.

Contract services

To sign up for Qtel's monthly Shahry plan, the process is the same as applying for the landline (see Landline Telephones). The same downloadable application form should be filled out and taken to a Qtel shop, along with the user's residence permit and Qatar ID card.

Various tariffs are available, including packages for Blackberries.

Vodafone's Freedom monthly payment plans are listed on their website, and can be set up by taking the user's residence permit and Qatar ID card to a Vodafone shop.

Shop locations for both providers can be found on both providers' websites.

Mobile handsets can be purchased from electrical stores and supermarkets throughout the country.

Lost SIM cards or handsets

In the case of a lost mobile handset or card, call the customer service number of the provider immediately. The number will then be blocked.
