Pet Restrictions

Information about regulations about ownership of pets and rules regarding dangerous dogsā€¦

In July 2012 a new law was introduced about keeping pet animals in apartment buildings. For residents in private houses there are no limitations to the number and size of the pets kept, with the only exceptions being dog breeds considered dangerous. For residents of apartments, the new law does not permit more than two cats in an apartment (six newborn kittens are allowed up to the age of four months) or owning dogs except those up to 53 cm high and guide dogs, song birds, parrots, goats, sheep and pigs (with exception of decorative mini-pigs).

Dangerous Dogs

Only dogs from potentially dangerous breeds require mandatory registration. These include American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Anatolian Shepherd Dogs, Caucasian Shepherd Dogs, Central Asian Shepherd Dogs, Karelian Bear Dogs and the South African Boerboel. Owners of these breeds should have a document certifying that the dog has had a course of training when older than 18 months.
