Production of electricity in Russia is dominated by two companies: Inter RAO and Gazprom Energoholding. Neither company sells directly to consumers, supply is instead available from a number of providers – some of these being subsidiaries of the producers, and this is set to be opened up to even more companies. However, distribution and transmission will remain limited to the two major companies.

The quality of the electricity supply is not quite on the level of Europe and North America, but is generally reliable, especially in the major cities. Although power cuts and blackouts are only frequently experienced, supply can be affected by surges, so it is advisable to protect sensitive equipment with current regulators.

As the country holds the world’s largest gas reserves, approximately half of the country’s electricity is produced by gas power stations. The rest is provided by other fossil fuels, hydroelectricity and nuclear power.

Gas Suppliers

Gas is supplied by regional companies controlled by authorised state bodies. As with electricity, Gazprom Energoholding is the main supplier to the Russian market, but doesn’t sell directly to consumers, so supply is instead available from a number of providers.
