Understand the water supply system in Russia and the different providers involved...
The supply of water and wastewater services in Russia is provided by state-run organisations alongside an increasing number of large private companies such as Rosvodokanal, Russian Communal Systems and Eurasian Water Partnership.
In Moscow, Russia's largest water company Moscovodkanal provides drinking water and sewerage for more than 13 million people in the city and surrounding area, equating to approximately 10 percent of the country’s total population.
Even in Moscow the water supply system in many areas is old, with tap water not considered by many to be suitable to drink. Most expatriates filter tap water or buy bottled water for consumption, even using this to boil for hot drinks.
When travelling to other cities, visitors are advised to clean teeth with bottled water and to avoid raw food or salads washed in tap water and ice made from non-bottled water. The water in remoter areas of the country may be discoloured and dangerous to consume.
