In South Korea teenagers can apply for a licence to drive a motorbike at 16 and a car at 18. A foreigner must have been resident in the country for six months to apply for a driver's licence. A passport or alien registration card is needed to support the application. The application process involves:
- Traffic safety training
- Medical examination
- Written test
- Technical driving test: When this test is passed, the candidate gets a driver's licence permit
- Road driving test: When this test is passed, the candidate gets a driving licence
The tests needed to get a driving licence can be taken in English, Chinese, Japanese, French and German.

Vehicle insurance
Vehicle insurance is compulsory in South Korea for any vehicle with an engine capacity greater than 50cc.
