Festivals and Events in Seoul

Information on some of the main festivals and events taking place in Seoul throughout the year...

eoul is home to many festivals, pageants and events throughout the year. Some of the most significant festivals in Seoul are:

Yeouido Spring Flower Festival

The festival is held annually in April when the cherry trees along Yunjungno Road are in full bloom. There are also photograph and flower decoration exhibitions and street art performances.

Lotus Lantern Festival

The Lotus Lantern Festival (Yeon Deung Hoe) is held annually on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month to celebrate Buddha's birthday. Thousands of handmade lanterns are displayed on the streets. There are various events, such as lantern parades, lotus-lantern making demonstrations, street events and dancing. Festival events are free to all and attract thousands of spectators.

Seoul Friendship Fair

This is a festival of free events, concerts, exhibitions and performances organised by the Seoul city government. The festival features traditional music and dance groups representing cultures from around the world, as well as local artists and vendors from Seoul's varied communities. The festival takes place in May every year.

Hi Seoul Festival

The Hi Seoul Festival is the biggest festival in Seoul and is a leading arts event taking place in May. There are fireworks, dance contests, cultural events and concerts. Festival events take place in different parts of the city.

Seoul Fringe Festival

Independent artists from around South Korea and from overseas participate in the festival in August. There is something for everyone, with musicals, comedies, family shows, drama, dance, improvisation and music.

Korea in Motion

The festival is developing a strong reputation for bringing leading non-verbal performing groups together in performances and exhibitions. There are different shows and performances, including street theatre, puppet shows, dancing and magic shows. It takes place over one month from September to October.

Seoul International Fireworks Festival

Yeouido Hangang Park provides the perfect setting for this community event, which takes place in October. Visitors can enjoy various performances and programmes, including fireworks, a water screen, music and laser performances.

Korea Queer Cultural Festival

Annual festival for the LGBT community taking place during May and June for two weeks. It presents new, provocative and challenging films, visual art, music, theatre, dance, performances, street parade and community events.

Seoul Design Festival

This international design festival is held every year in Seoul. The latest designs from South Korea and all over the world are on display, as well as over a hundred events, exhibitions, workshops and presentations. The festival takes place in December.
