La Cala de Mijas on the Costa del Sol

Information about the city of La Cala de Mijas, including the main tourist attractions, local pastimes, history, geography and important telephone numbers...

La Cala de Mijas, called "La Cala" by locals, is approximately 25 minutes from Malaga airport. It is in the municipality of Mijas, in the province of Málaga and within the autonomous region of Andalucia. La Cala has effectively become the geographical hub of the municipality's growing population, linking Las Lagunas (on the outskirts of Fuengirola) with the city of Calahonda.

Local Life

The long beaches in La Cala are well cared for, with clean, golden sand.

There is a large cultural centre in La Cala de Mijas, with a permanent art exhibition. It also offers many activities, such as golf, tennis, swimming and judo, for the long summer holidays. There is a children's activity club on the beach, where kids can swim, jump on trampolines or explore the pirate ship nearby.

Local fishermen have not only survived the changes brought about by a massive flood of tourists, but have actually been a major reason for the town's popularity. They have tried to retain the Spanish flavour of the area while welcoming the primarily British tourists.

Leisure Activities In and Around La Cala de Mijas

The Hipodromo de Costa del Sol offers horse racing, jumping, stabling and lessons. It has an on-site hotel. An English-owned riding school and stables, Equitación La Cala, can be found in the hills just behind La Cala.

With over 300 days of sunshine a year, golf is a popular activity in the La Cala area. Many of the courses are considered among the best in Europe.

Every Wednesday and Saturday there is a local market at the La Cala de Mijas fair ground.
