Information about the city of Marbella, including the main tourist attractions, local pastimes, history, geography and important telephone numbers...
Marbella, with its yacht marina, numerous golf courses and luxury shops, is generally considered a playground for the movie stars and royalty. Its weather, with more than 300 days of sunshine a year, makes it a popular tourist destination.
Local Life
Marbella has numerous towering apartment buildings and a relatively large English-speaking population. La Cañada shopping centre has quite a few English high-street shops and a UK-style workout centre. The city's famous Golden Mile is lined with luxury residences, shops and beautiful gardens.
Flowers abound in Marbella, especially in the striking, white-washed, old town area. The 16th century town hall in Plaza de los Naranjos (Plaza of the Oranges) has among the most beautiful gardens in town. The plaza is named after the numerous orange trees lining the streets there. The plaza is considered to be the heart of the city and has numerous galleries, shops, bars, churches and bistros.
The city is home to the vibrant City Theatre of Marbella (Teatro Cuidad de Marbella), which features many music events and shows throughout the year.
Leisure Activities In and Around Marbella
The excellent weather in Marbella makes it possible to engage in outdoor activities year-round. There are more than 12 beaches, and water sports are very popular. Golf is also a primary draw of the area, as there are over 40 area golf courses to choose from. Tennis and horse riding are also quite popular.
Every Monday the local market takes place at the fairgrounds in Marbella.
