Bus Services in Madrid

Information about the regional and city bus transport system...

Madrid is well served by buses, with both state-owned and private services.

EMT Urban Buses

The Madrid Municipal Transport Company, called EMT (Empresa Municipal de Transportes de Madrid) provides regular group transport services in Madrid. It is owned by the Madrid Town Council.

Passengers can purchase their ticket (billete) on the bus, which is valid for one trip on that bus. A Metrobús ticket, good for ten journeys, can not be purchased on buses but can be purchased at newspaper stands, Metro stations and tobacco shops. Passengers using multi-trip tickets must validate their ticket using the machine onboard the bus.

Late-night busses (búhos) are available in Madrid, departing from Plaze de Cibeles.

Note: bus passengers at bus stops must indicate, with a wave of the arm, that they want an approaching bus to stop.

Information on when the next EMT bus should arrive at a particular stop can be obtained via text message. Send a text message to the number 217 217, starting with the word "espera", enter a space, then add the bus stop number (which can be found on the bus shelter), enter a space, then add the line number of the bus. EMT will answer within a few minutes.

Smartphone users can access up-to-the-minute information and directions to the nearest bus stop using downloadable applications.

Suburban and interurban buses are operated by a number of private companies.

Tour Buses

Madrid City Tour is a double-decker tour bus that goes on a 75-minute panoramic tour of Madrid, on one of two possible routes. Tourists can hop on and off the bus any time they wish on either of the routes. The routes are: Modern Madrid and Historical Madrid.

The bus has an open top-deck and is provided with a low floor and a ramp for handicapped access. Tourist information is offered in eight languages. All customers receive a map with routes and discount vouchers for museums, monuments and other attractions.

Tickets can be bought online, at travel agencies, hotels, MCT information points and on the MCT buses.

Long-Distance Transportation

Several Spanish companies offer long-distance transportation from and to Madrid. Among them are the following:

La Sepulvedana links Madrid with the mountain range to its north (Navacerrada, Guadarrama, Villalba etc.) It also has long distance lines to Segovia:
