The School Year

Information about the school holidays in Taiwan and schooling hours...

In Taiwan the school year is made up of two semesters. The first starts in September and finishes in late January or early February. There is then a two- or three-week holiday encompassing the Spring Festival and Chinese New Year. The second semester starts in the middle of February and continues until early June and the start of the summer holiday.

The school year of private international schools in Taiwan may differ to local schools, however, and it is recommended to check with the individual school for precise dates.

The school week runs from Monday to Friday from around 07:30 until 16:00. The school day may be shorter or longer depending on the student’s age and his/her grade. For instance, in elementary schools, younger students go home earlier than older students. Some schools end the day at midday on Wednesdays.

There are also options to study after normal school hours and during school holidays at private “cram schools”. These are attended by many Taiwanese students to prepare them for exams or admissions tests as competition is fierce to get into some of the top universities.
