Children With Special Needs

Understand what kind of assistance is available for children with special needs in the Taiwan school system...

Only some schools can accept students with special needs. These schools provide children with at least six years of pre-school and elementary education and three years each of junior and senior high schooling. Taiwan’s special education schools accept students with both mental and physical disabilities and there are schools catering for blind and deaf children. There are also special classes for exceptionally gifted or talented children.

Children with disabilities can benefit from free bus services between home and school, or transport subsidies

As with regular education, students can elect to do vocational subjects at the senior high level. In 2001 a programme known as "12-Year Educational Placement Plan for Disabled Students" was implemented to encourage students with disabilities to continue their senior or vocational studies, through free tuition and school fees. The curriculum in special education schools is designed to give students professional skills. Some standard elementary, junior high and senior high schools also offer special classes.
